Any opinion, good or bad, on ceramic coated headers? I've found a nice set for under $300 and figured I'd bling up my 390. Is the coating durable? Are they a pain to keep looking nice? If I buy them, will scantly clad babes flock near my truck as indicated in their ad? Please hep!
Buddy of mine has Hooker ceramic coated headers. The ceramic coating is starting to flake after about 3 yrs of having them on, but there's no signs of any rust or anything on the metal.
And yes, scantily clad babes will flock to your truck. But be warned, you might not want ALL of them to be scantily clad.
If your starting out with new headers with high end not cheapo's I would check for fit then smooth everything then have them ceramic coated inside and out not just the outside. It does make a difference especially if done all the way back to and including the X cross plus good high flowing exhaust system and mufflers.
Your FE will thank you.
I bought a set of Dynomax ceramic coated headers for my 74' F-100 302 and the were rusted after about 2 years or so. These header weren't expensive but I have lost faith in ceramic coating for a rust inhibitor. IMO the only way to go is with stainless if you want the headers to last and stay nice. My next set for the 74' will probably be painted cause to keep the cost down. Then when they rust I'll pull them off and repaint them.
Ceramic coatings are only as good as the person who applies them and being they were on a lowest bid contract from the header manufacture this is what you get.
Coated in and out by HPC i've never had a rust out or even a rust problem with many years use.
Hence raw headers, check fit, blend, smooth down sharp edges then have coated and enjoy.
I sent my L&L headers off of my 429 to Jet Hot Coating Inc. about 4 years ago. Don't have alot of miles on them, but they still look great. No rust or flakes, but a slight fade i would say. They are coated inside and out. Look pretty sweet sticking out of the fenderwell!!!!!!
Also I forgot to mention. If the headers you are going to buy are good quality and worth putting on your FE then jump on them. Just to get my headers shipped and coated was about $380...not to mention the L&L headers are around $400+ a set now days.
I wound up buying the next better set from Heddman. They're thermal coated, not as shiny, but are made better than my first pick plus they have ball and socket connectors. Can't wait to slap 'em on! Thanks again!
