302 overheating

<TABLE><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top width="100%">All, I have a 302(allegedly from a 1968 Mustang) and a C4 auto trans in my 1951 F1 Ford Pickup. I am experiencing overheating when I get caught in stop & go traffic. Can anyone give me some tips about how to go about diagnosing the solution to this problem. Water pump & thermostat is new incidentally.

make sure there is no air bubles in it when its cold open the raditor cap and run it for a while to get any air bubbles out .also check the fan clucth the fan should spin with little rezistance if it freewheels its probly bad .hope this helps oh one more thing this 302 could have a big over bore so maby a 180 stat would help .

You may also have installed the head gaskets backwards. Only way to tell for sure is at least pull the intake and see if the front coolant ports are blocked as the y should be. With the intake off, you can thread a wire thru the front port on the intake side, down to the front port between the head and block to check this. If this port is open the coolant shortcuts from the pump up to the thermostat without ever going thru the rest of the engine and drawing off heat.

The PO installed the engine back in 1992. I don't know if he rebuilt the engine or not. The only thing I know for sure is that he installed a Offenhauser intake manifold and headers. It has a new Holley 4 bbl carb on it. I replaced the old Holley myself.
