fuel addative

Someone told me to add a bottle of 2 stroke oil in my fuel tank every couple of fill ups to help lubricate the engine. Does anyone do this? This is in California. Thanks

Older vehicles use to use leaded gas. The lead in the gas was used to lubricate the valves. And possibly a couple other parts. As unleaded gas became the norm, and it became more and more difficult to get leaded gas, there was a big concern for the older cars. Many manufacturers now have additives such as "InsteadOlead". But, before that sort of additive came out, there were other ways to lube the valves in your engine.

In some of my older cars; like my 1966 mustang, about every 4th or 5th fill up, I would prepare for a somewhat long ride. Where I could use at least a half a tank of gas. I would fill it up with high octane, and add a quart of transmission fluid to the gas tank. You could also use Marvel's Mystery oil, but ATF was cheaper.

If you have a vehicle that is designed to run on unleaded gas, then that is not neccessary to do. Could you? Sure. Is it going to hurt it? No, not at all. But, if I really thought that it was going to help, I would use at least something that at least claims to be for that purpose. E.g. Marvel's Mystery Oil. It's only about $3.50 for a quart, and you only put in about 4 ounces for 10 gallons of gas. It's right on the instructions on the bottle. I will do that to my vehicles, but rarely and when it's on a scheduled long trip where I will be filling up at least once. This way there isn't a significant amount of oil settling in the gas tank. Not that it would hurt, just that I don't want it there. Later... Mike....

Well, the nature of diesel fuel is much different than gas anyway. But, if it would make you feel better, the marvel mystery oil says it can be used in gas or diesel.

One thing about cars, is unless you're dealing with a classic which was built around an older technology which is no longer available; e.g. leaded gas, the newer vehicles were meant to be run according to the owner's manual. I've driven quite a few Big Rigs in my time. Obviously all diesel. I just put in diesel fuel. Nothing really special. Usually at about 50,000 miles; 18-24 months, I would do an engine flush with the oil. Other than that, I would say run it normal. Later... Mike....

you didnt drive the big rigs very much, cause a normal otr'er puts 50,000 miles on in about 3 or 4 months. I remember hearing about the 2 stroke thing though. I have to say call your very best ford dealer in your area & ask the top psd mechanic about it.

change your oil and filter per the manual and leave the additives out.

Not cross country. Mostly flatbed. In state area clearing construction, bringing in equipment, etc... Good part time work. Few hundred miles a week. Point is, the company who who owns the truck didn't add anything to them, and flushed them about every 50,000 miles. If they fealt comfortable doing that for a fleet of 12 trucks, then it should be good for a personal diesel. Later... Mike...
