i have a 01 f350 with a 6 speed manual transmission. when idleing or driving (only in gear) i get a loud growling noise, i think i have it pinned down to the bell housing. it goes away if i put the clutch in or put it into nuetral. i took it to a transmission shop and they said, if it goes away at 1000 rpms it isnt a problem, ( i feel if it was not a problem all trannys would do it). a friend of mine told me it may be a dual plate flywheel? if anyone can help i would grately appriciate it
Just to clarify, it does this when in gear and clutch out, and in neutral with clutch out? If you think the noise is coming from the bell area, then I would say it could be the input bearing or even the pilot bearing. Yes the dual mass flywheels are nothing but boat anchors, they are a waste of money.
I would suggest that you drain the fluid out of the tranny and see if there is any metal in the fluid. If so then you might suspect an internal problem, if not then it may be pilot bearing or something pertaining to the clutch assembly.
I don't have much experience with them, it may be the cause. I just know that many people have tried them and did not like them. They are very expensive and you can not have them turned.
one of the employes at the tranny shop said just from hering me pull in that, that was what he thought it was while his boss said it wasnt anything. i my self dont know anything about them but if i keep the truck i think ill put in a solid piece
you do not have a dual mass flywheel in your truck. there are a few issues with the 6spd truck from springs coming out of the disc and contaminating pilot bearing and rel brgs. If you get this constant growl while in gear i would suggest pulling it down before you do further damage. If the pilot brg is damaged and you continue to drive it you will end up with a 3500 trany rebuild on top of everything else due to a ruined input shaft. Give me a call if you have any questions.

I have a 6 speed as well, bought it new, and it has always made that growling noise at low rpm's. It now has almost 250k on it with no tranny trouble and i still have the factory cluch. Try some synthetic atf. It eliminated about 50% of the noise in my truck when i switched over to it.
But as someone else stated if it is the pilot bearing, replace it with the kevlar bushing.
