Rear diff smell ??

I had a leak a few months back(maybe 5 months ago).I replaced the pinion(which was leaking) and i also replaced both axle seals. Now i have no leak, but when the rear diff gets hot,it smells like axle fluid every time i get out of the truck.
Did i overfill it?
Is the smell just coming out of the vent?

If you suspect an over filled diff, then you should check it after a run...when the axle is at operating temp. Just remove that fill plug while on level surface. At least you can eliminate that...

Do you have a LS diff? Did you add the proper amount of friction modifier?

Good luck...

Did you spill any gear oil where you park? Did you spill any on the diff while filling/replacing seals?

I had a 9" go on me, where the gear oil got on the ground stunk for weeks.

There is no such thing as overfilling the diff.... once it's full, gear lube will pour out of the filling hole. It's impossible to keep pumping oil in there. So... unless there's a leak, no problem!

That is almost true.

However, if the diff is being filled on an incline (ie: home driveway) where the fill hole is facing up towards the incline, then it is possible to add more than the recommended amount of fluid. Not by much...but still more than recommended. Just something to consider...

That is why it is so important to find a level area to check the fluid level.

You may want to check the axle seals at the axles.
