I'm looking at getting headers for my truck when I do the exhaust pretty soon. My question is, with the 351 am I going to need shorty headers? If I can go with long tubes is that better option? Also, I don't recall but doesn't the egr tap into the headers? If so, do aftermarket parts have the tap for this or will I need to do it myself?
Lastly, are there any specific brands that I should be wary of? I know a lot of people say that the ceramic coated is the way to go...
Some of the aftermarket headers are equipped for the EGR and O2 sensor, some are not. Longtubes are a better option if you want maximum low rpm torque. Shorties are a better option if you want to use the stock Y pipe. I suggest ceramic coated or stainless or you will be replacing them in as little as 3yrs, though they will last a bit longer in southern and/or dry climates.
I should have mentioned that I don't do much pulling with my truck. Mostly used for transportation and light hauling with the occasion use of the 4x4. That being said, are shorties a more fitting choice for me? And I think I might be using the stock y-pipe since we have emissions issues in california and most muffler shops won't mess with my cats. I have also heard that some people have issue fitting the long tubes onto the 351, is this correct??

If your emissions test includes a stock looking exhaust system then yes longtubes may violate that. We have similar emissions tests here and my truck easily passes the sniffer test, but nobody cares if it looks factory or not so I get to use whatever exhaust parts I want.
Yes some people claim to have hugh issues with longtubes on these trucks.. can't get them to fit.. they hang down too low.. stuff like that. I have had 2 different brand longtubes on my last 2 trucks and installation was a breeze. I had to remove a wierd pointed protrusion on the passenger side frame on this truck to clear one of the pipes, but all I did was grind this thing down inline with the rest of the frame.. that's it. The headers do not hang below the trailing arm brackets on the frame, so there's no danger of them getting in the way either. Obviously every header brand will be slightly different so milage will vary.
