Codes from my 89 351 W

I pulled the codes from my 89 351 W Bronco and this is what I got:

Code 34: Thermactor
Code 44: EGR Valve
Code 77: No Idea

now all this is well and good, but I have no idea what to do from here, I'm having major idle and acceleration problems. Can anyone help.

Oh by the way, is there any way to clean a catalytic converter?

Thanks anybody that can help.

Mike

Codes from my 89 351 W

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Jun-02 AT 11:28 PM (EST)]LOL: 77 is operator error!

Thermactor: screw it, I removed all of mine but TTBOMK it doesn't have to work for the vehicle to operate normally (but you may fail emissions tests).

Your idle problem is almost surely the EGR. Looks like your code is for the EVP (EGR valve position sensor), so replace it.

So, ignore the two codes and fix the EGR code. See this link:

None of those codes should produce major drivability issues. You got to get into it some more. You should run thermactor and egr. They are important to good drivability. Egr helps on pinging and thermactor is just putting oxygen in to help further burning in the exhaust. Not much to gain by leaving it off. If it is working wrong it may cause problems if it is blowing upstream across the hego when it should be downstream into the cat. The air on the hego makes the signal lean so the pcm gives more fuel thinking the engine is lean when it is really the air pump putting air where it doesn't belong. Thats why I would check out the codes but keep in mind that there is something else going on. Norm.

It pumps straight into the cat; how could it pump air upstream?

Most Ford systems have an air bypass valve and a air control valve. The bypass sends air either to the control valve or vents it. The control valve either sends it upstream into the heads through a crossover tube or downstream at the cat. I use the word most since there are many different calibrations and variations on where the air is injected. I smogged a 94 van Monday that was a 49 state vehicle and it only used an air bypass valve while a 94 calif. van would use both.
