No clue about places for you to wheel, but just wanted to say congrats, that's the same truck I'm running (which it so happens is also my first 4x4)
You might want to try asking around in the Off Road Forum, or the Illinois Chapter. Welcome to FTE!

Excellent! Replace those u-joints. I always just bought Spicer u-joints, places like broncograveyard.com have them. Napa u-joints seem good as well. Go through the whole truck, you won't regret it. Start at an area, such as the driveline, check things, like you have already: u-joints, slip joint, rear end play, front end play, hubs, wheel bearings, brakes, emergency brake cables. This area is crucial and you mine as well start off on the right foot, knowing how your truck stands. Chances are, if u-joints are shot, other areas of your driveline are worn as well as your suspension (ball joints, tie rods, bushings, etc)

You and I might be kin folk. LOL! I just bought my first 4wd. A 1978 F-250 - AND IT'S YELLOW! or at least it used to be . . . . faded bad right now.

Distributor is missing. I know one U-joint at the front of the transfer case is bad on mine.

Gonna get it running first, then hit the driveline.

Keep us posted on your progress - I'll prolly have a few dozen questions to ask on here myself.

Been signed up a while, but have hardly posted. That may change.

Mitch

From your description, it sounds like you need axle joints?. Try and get the Spicer brand joints, you can't go wrong with them. They even make them now with zerk fittings so you can grease them. This will also provide you the opportunity to re-pack/replace the wheel bearings and seals, and check the brakes. Good luck!
