Tranny Swap Question

The A4LD in my son's 1989 Ranger 4x4 is on it's last legs, and I have a chance to pick up a '91 Explorer 4x4 with auto tranny. Does anyone know if this tranny will bolt up to the 2.9L? I'd swap the entire package but then it wouldn't pass IM testing. Thanks!

Don't the 2.8, 2.9, and 4.0 OHV all share the same bellhousing bolt pattern? I think they do and if they do, you may be good to go.

One of the main concerns I have is with the torque converter. In '90, they started using an computer controlled lock up torque converter I believe. You may be able to use your '89 TC.

The 4.0 A4LD is stronger than the 2.9 A4LD.

I don't know how restrictive Alaska is, but in most cases, you are free to swap an engine from a newer vehicle into your older vehicle. As long as it is the same year swap, or newer you should be fine.

You didn't mention what engine was in the 89' (probably 2.9L), so not 100% sure if it will fit. I do know you can't swap the 4 cyl trans with a 6 cyl trans.

Another thing to look out for is the shift linkage! As long as your truck has the column shift and V6 and the donor has the same it will work. If 1 has the floor shifter then you would have to change the linkage in the trans PITA, because they are not the same. ( Not sure what year they switched ) My 88 has floor shift and I got a trans from a 90 everything was the same EXEPT the linkage comeing out of the tranny.
