Roaring , Whinning or Wind noise
I was on the freeway last week and the noise coming from the front sounded like something wrong in the AC or cooling area. It didn't affect the drivability much so I just drove till I got home. When I inspected the engine area I found a somewhat locked up fan clutch. So next day I went to AZone and paid I guess $70 for a LT warranty unit made by Imperial. I install it and that noise seemed to go away.
Now I'm hearing it again and it sounds like a bad fan blade. But how could that be? I moved the old fan blade to the new clutch unit and it did not have anything wrong with it, such as bent out of shape. When it accelerates it seems to wind out and make more groaning, or gear noise (maybe tranny or diff?) and doesn't seem like the T/C is transferring the motion to the wheels like it use to before all this started to happen. When it's up to speed on the freeway going 70+ there isn't that much noise. The performance other than the slower acceleration at the low speed is pretty much better than normal, even going up a steep hill on the freeway it will keep speed at 70mph.
Another maybe related problem, is that the AC quits giving out cold air after an hour or two of driving and it's usually when I'm stuck in traffic. Then I turn the AC off and wait for about 15 min. I turn it back on and it works again.
Is there some kind of vapor lock going on? The R12 manifold gauge set read 30psi on the low side and 160psi on the high side, when I recently added a can of freon.
Am I in deep do-do? I mean with a $$$ repair bill of a tranny or something??
Help please,
Ron
