Yes, I know this fish well..I've caught many of these in my time. It is the infamous and dreaded Blark fish, so named for it's blurry and dark appearance.
seems to big...to be a small mouth bass. Going with Florida strain Black Bass all the way.
Though I don't know how the hell it swam all the way up the that part of the country....
Yea, you beat me to it. It is a bass, but what kind. I go with Black bass. Never seen one in real life, but I have fished in bass tournements for small mouth. In doing so I have read a lot about bass, and fish in general. But the picture is so bad it could be a small mouth, but one heck of a big one.
My other pick would be some kind of jetty rock fish. But who ever took the pic needs a better camera!
it could also be a highbred. years ago in Pennsylvania we were at a lake that had highbred bass, a cross between largemouth and smallmouth.
as for the picture quality, i can see two things with that also. it is either a very old print that was scanned with a cheap scanner, or was taken with a camera phone, and sent to a computer and printed, then the print was scanned and saved.
Yeah sorry for the picture quality. It's a scan of a picture that was already bad to begin with. That's enlarged by about 50%.
Here's the reason I ask: I need to determine the fish type, and if that wish holds any sort of record. It's for a class project. The only other info I have is that the boy is about 10 years old, so I need to find out if that fish is a record in that age group.
Any ideas on where to find a list of fishing records for the northwest US?
Checked their site online and the current record doesn't match with the criteria I was given, so it could be a past record that has since been broken. I'll give them a ring on Monday to see if they keep a list of previous record catches.
Are you guys at a general concensus that its a small mouth bass?
Undoubtedly a small mouth bass. I have caught many there myself. As for the size----very nice fish but when it is held at arms length in fornt of the boy it appears much larger than it actually is----nice effect though. Any smallmouth over about 18" is considered very nice in that area for reference.
