I installed the MAC intake on my 03' today. Did absolutley nothing, but damn it looks good. We'll see about the mpg's but I'm not holding my breath. It does sound real good when you get on the throttle with the hood open, but with it closed there is no difference.
I put a Mac on my V-10 a couple of months ago, couldn't really tell any seat of the pants difference, but when you get onit a bit now, it sounds like a HUGE 4-barrel carburator sucking air!!
If all that dirt can get into the engine compartment and everybody tells you that K&N's cannot filter out that stuff as well as paper, why would you do that?
I know the string is ghetto LOL but it keeps the mas air flow sensor and filter from bouncing around its a temporary fix for now .

well I guess I did not do my home work about K&N filters not being as good as paper filters . I bought the truck about a month ago I know I need to clean the engine compartment out . I do not plan on driving the truck on dirt roads I got the truck to tow my SPL competition van around to shows so it's not my daily driver even though it is fun to drive .

thats cool I made my own intake . Put up some pics of your intake
What was the purpose of this? I'm just curious. The stock filter housing doesn't have anything hindering the airflow. There is no "cold air" effect when your drawing in hot underhood air. There's not even one of those really cool shields to help "isolate" your filter from all the heat. I'd venture to guess your not gaining anything except for more frequent filter cleaning's but hey, to each his own.
Dont clean the K&N. Leave all the dust around it for a few thousand miles, and before you know it, it'll do just as good as paper...
I don't know, but using stock Motorcraft paper filters, my MAF gets black. With an oiled-gauze filter for the past 10K miles? Nothing. You figure it out.

Listen, I was juts bustin' on ya.
Well...you DO need to clean the engine compartment. And I would reconsider your intake "mod". Especially the string.
I don't have anything bad to say about K&N really. To each his own. Heck, I've got one! But at least protect the thing. Either get a shield around the whole shebang or put the stock housing back on.
Some guys have cut their stock housing back so that the filter is exposed like yours. However, they left the mounting studs so that you won't have to secure it with string.
Other's have just cut the tip off the housing and used the snorkel to direct air to it via the Zoodad mod. (What I did on my last Excursion)
Whatever the case, just make sure you can secure that thing. That string is so...so...yeah...ghetto. And clean it!
I read that some folks recommend cleaning your V10, but I will offer this "CAUTION".
If you do clean it, pay special careful attention around the COP/Plug areas. Get water down one or more...and you might develop a miss...and start a rust condition for the spark plug.
IMHO...the COP/Plug design is not the best I have seen...so just be careful with it.
