Tailgate Load... help

I have a 04 screw witht he 5.5' bed. I also am buying a yamaha atv that has a total length of 78 inches, so in order to carry this in the bed of my truck it needs to sit on the rear tailgate...

However, the load limit that I am concerned with is the load or driving the atv up onto the tailgate using the ramps. The atv weighs 700 pounds plus my 225... taht is apporaching 1000 pounds of weight. Does anyone know the tailgate can handle this?

I don't think all 1000# will be on your tailgate at once. I had some pretty hefty loads on my last trucks tailgate (Mazda B4000). Just keep you eye on the condition of the cables.

Not sure about our new 04-up trucks but my 96 had a maximum of 500lbs load on the tailgate. This was due to the cables holding the gate up, not the hinge part of the gate. I would have to say it's still probably only 500lbs. I would hate to have the cable snap as your driving up it....you'll loose the tailgate too.

I see full sized 4x4 ATV's loaded into trucks all the time and never a tailgate fail. But use at your own risk!

see if you can rig up some heavier duty cables if you're concerned or better yet some padded posts/padded sawhorse you can prop under your tailgate for extra durability.

I have put my Honda Rincon (600lbs plus my..... more than 225) in my 5.5, and it has never even flinched. I dont think you have anything to worry about. When the bike is on the ramps, alot of the weight is directed down at the base of them. At no point is all of that weight only on the tailgate. Buy with confidence!

I load a Kawasaki ATV into the bed. I guide it up the ramps and give it only a little gas. As it moves into the bed I stop the gas and let it roll in until the front wheels hit the 4 by 4 I place in the bed. By doing it this way I can stand on the ground and load the ATV. First few times I had a guy in the bed to help, but now it is a piece of cake.

Dont sweat it. I load my 07 kawie prarie with a winch and other weight robbing accessories on the quad, almost every weekend. The cable isnt frayed at all and I see no problem with it

p.S. just make sure when you are loading up the quad using ramps, make sure the ramps are secured. You dont want the ramps to slide out and cause an accident

pps. lets see some pics of the quad!!! You can see mine over at nyrocatv.com under the Prairie 360 section. I have the same user name over there.

Hasn't anyone seen Ford add on TV where they are loading 890 Lbs. on the end of the tailgate of a F-150, not the center but the back end?? The tailgate dose not break, so it must be true. Ford would not false advertise?????? Hummmmmmm

We put atvs in the back on these all the time and there is always atleast 700 pounds of people sitting on the tailgate fishing at the beach. So I would not worry bout it. Shoot I even stuck one of ours in the back of a 2003 tacoma with the back tire sitting on the tailgate and thats a baby of a tailgate compared to an F-150. What kind of atv are you getting?

One thing I was impressed with with that commercial was that they used the actual truck that can tow and haul that much load. Not like chevy or Toyota that has a crew cab 4x4 on a commercial and says the tow rating is 10500 or whatever they can tow when it is just a regualr cab 2wd that can only tow that much.
