Had the key in the on position (2-3 minutes) for a while, installing new radio and checking it out. Went to start the truck from the on position and cranked several times but would not start.
Turned key off and went back to start position and it fired right up.
Is this normal.........what is up with this?
It probably has some electrical safety in case you forget your keys in the on position. It probably shuts the fuel pumps off after a while. Sorry I can't say for sure though. If it fired right up after shutting the key off and turning it back on, I wouldn't worry at all about it.
I wouldn't say cold. 70 degrees out, but no it hadn't been started prior to that.
When I first turned the key to the on position, fuel pump primed-up and glow plug light came on and then went off, so did warning buzzer. Messed with radio for a while and turned to start.........cranked several seconds and no start. Went back to off, then to on, waited for glow plug light to go off and bing-go START.
mine did the same thing. i was busting some serious drifts with the truck and the next morning it would not start. i tried several times but nothing. i mean it wasn't ever cranking. so with the key still on i crawled under the truck and tapped the starter a few times and i left the key on for maybe 5 mins and turned the key and it cranked but cranked on and on. shut the key off and then on and it fired right up. so yours is not the only one. maybe like hawk said some sort of failsafe. i dont know
The answer is likely that after the key is left on the glow plugs cool off and in effect you are starting it without them. When you turn the key off and then back to start the glow plugs reheat.
when you turn on the key, the fuel pump works for 20 seconds or so, then until it sees oil pressure, its not going to start. It's the same for starting after replacing fuel filters, no reason to crank more than 20 seconds.
