Bye Bye diesel
Bye Bye diesel
Hi guys, i have been flirting with the idea of swapping out the 6.9 in my 84 f250 and i about have everything figured out except for the trans. i have been reading many posts and from what i have gathered you cannot bolt a diesel trans to a 460 block. It has a four speed manual in it now and i would like to put a four speed or maybe even a 5 speed manual. my question is what is the best trans and if i do swap out the trans does that mean the transfer case will no longer fit? also does anyone know off hand or know where icould find a list of what transmissions were offered in 84 for the diesel and big blocks?
thanks guys,
Jamie

Since you have a 4 speed, all you need is the bellhousing to match the engine. Dimensionally, the transmissions are identical. Gear ratios may or may not be different.
For the diesel and 460, prior to the ZF 5 speed, and the E4OD, the transmission options were the Borg Warner T19, and the C6 auto.

I have have been told that you can not hook up a diesel trans to a gas engine and visa-versa. I was wanting to do the same thing but i have decided now to just turbo my truck and put propane injection on it. I have an automatic transmission on my 1984 F-250 and it only has 3 speeds and i was wondering if you are not going to be able to use your four speed trans if i could maybe buy yours with all the hook ups. Just wondering, if not that is fine. I wish you luck on your build though.
Sorry. We can't talk to you anymore. J/K. Your tranny will work fine. You just need to get the 460 bellhousing. Hey Turboman, you read it all too quickly. He's manual, you're auto, or were you thinking of converting over to a stickshift? You can get the new pedal set-up out of any ford truck gas or diesel.

GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGas? Thy stab us in thee heart! LOL! Just need to change the bell housing. The t-18 was geared a little lower in 1st to accomodate less torque from the gas in that RPM range. You should have a t-19 same trans case slightly geared higher just swap bell housing or put the t-18 in it's place if you can find one.
Yeah i was wanting to change from a auto to a manual. Just was wondering but it looks like he can use the same trans but if anybody else has a 4 speed manual that they do not need you know who to talk to. One question though i have a 4x4 and will a regular manual trans hook up right to the transfer case?

T18 gasser, T 19 diesel, C 6 auto gas, C 6 auto diesel, ZF 5 gas, ZF 5 diesel, E4OD gas and E4OD diesel transmissions will all hook up to the 1345 or 1356 transfer case found in 1983 thru 1997 4x4 trucks.
The 1999 and later trucks used a NP 283 transfer case which has a larger input shaft to match the ZF 6 and 4R100 transmissions.
The T 18 and T 19 transmissions are the only transmissions Ford offered that have seperate bell housings from the transmission housing. They are the only transmissions that will work behind both a gas and diesel motor by using the correct bell housing to attach to the motor.
All the other transmissions use an integral transmission/bell housing, so they are engine specific transmissions.
