I have just replaced my oil pump again and I still have no oil pressure. But this time when I start it up after it has sat for a while I have great oil pressure, but when it idles down after about a minute the pressure drops right back down and the engine starts knocking.I did notice that the oil pump gasket that I had put on previous was on wrong and a piece of the gasket had broken off. It was a small piece about the size of half a pinky nail. Could this be part of the problem? Could I have a blockage somewhere? If so is there a way to flush out the engine? Im using 5w 30. Should I go to a heavier oil to help with pressure? Help me please.
I had almost the same problem with my 86. I replaced the oil pump
without any luck, my oil pressure would drop right off. It finally turned out to be my motor. Not saying this could be your problem. But it might be. Gaskets are cheap, try and replace it and see what happens.
I did replace the gasket and the rod and main bearings. The oil pump is new to. I think it is the engine and I have been pricing them. I just wanted to see if there was another way around it.
"I did replace the gasket and the rod and main bearings." Did you check the crank and rod clearance when you changed bearings? If the rod or crank journals are worn then replacing the bearings would'nt solve the problem. It sounds like you have too much rod or main bearing clearance. This is why you don't have any oil pressure. The knocking sound is also an indication.Have you checked the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge?
