If you are like me when I first drove my 350 you are probaly a little heavy in the right foot. It took me a few thousand miles to get the power grin out of my right foot. I too only got 12 miles per gallon at first. But now with 10,000 miles i average 14 with mixed driving and short trips. When on long highway trips i can get 17-18 at 70mph. The trick is to keep rpm's under 1800. This is the range you will see the best mileage 1650-1800 rpm's. Anything over 1800rpm's and the laws of physics take over.
That does sound odd. Even screwing around or better yet, plowing, I don't get that bad fuel milage. Not even on day one. Plowing I get ~13 mpg. Sumthin' skwuwy gowin' on... Especially with you having a stick. My experience has always been that a standard will always get better fuel milage than an auto.
