I am having my timing chain replaced on my 68 and I was thinking about having a new water pump put on it while my mechanic has everything apart as I think it is the original pump. Is that a good idea? also anyone know of anything else I should have him do. The timing chain did not brake but it is noisy.
68bluebeast when this has been done on a number of my Fords I like to replace the water pump, v-belts, hoses and thermostat. I used to work in a service station and it seemed like when you tried to get by on the cheap a hose or thermostat would fail. Also I like to carry spare hoses and belts when I travel and with the old units I know they will fit. How many times have you bought a v-belt, hose, u-joint etc just to find out it is wrong and all the parts guy can say is that is what the screen said.
You might also want to check and make sure the installer is putting in a quality chain and gears set. If your truck is a "keeper" it's worth the extra $$$ to put in a roller chain, or possibly even a double roller chain and gears set. I use Cloye's in every engine I have apart. They cost a bit more, but quality usually does....
