so i was driving around town sunday, just before i got home i noticed a grumbling when i let off the gas. left for work monday morning and i started to get worse. it only does it when i let off which made me think it was the u-joints or the pinion bearings. checked both of them they were fine along with the carrier bearing. never had an issue with the tires or wheels been on the truck for 20k miles so im ruling them out. there are no wheel weights missing or balance weights on the drive shaft missing either. the bearings on the rear axles seem fine also. cant feel it in the wheel so im pretty sure its in the rear. its starting to drive me crazy-mostly cause i have to drive a grand am to work though. i wish i still worked at the dealership so i could use the vibration detection equipment ohh well, any help or ideas is appreciated
Check those U-Joints again. I had the same problem.
Thought my U-Joints were Ok by just trying to check for looseness one handed.
Get under the truck with a good light and look closly for rust powder residue that has come out from the needle bearings(hard to see) and use a large screwdriver or something like it and pry the joints back and forth.
The last U-Joint (next to the pinion) was the one on mine that was bad.
After finding the rusty residue , I took the drive shaft off and I could not believe it but it was froze up pretty bad and could not turn it at all by hand. .....Replaced that u-Joint and .......No mor vibrations while decellerating and slowing down.
I agree, check those u-joints. I had 2 bad on my truck and i didnt even feel it until i dropped the shafts. The rear one had so much play in it i was suprised it didnt explode, and the one with the slip yoke joint on it i couldnt move. Replaced and all was good. Also check the front wheel bearings, that was another source of my vibration.
thanks guys, last night i got so po'd i just started tearing stuff apart, front hubs, took the axles out, checked the rear bearings, pinion bearings, carrier bearings, everything but the u joints for some reason. thats what i figured it was when it first happened so i dont know why i didnt look deeper into it
