voltage change

My lights, and electric fans rev.. like a power surge.. So, I checked the voltage with a volt meter and found the voltage to go from 14.+ to 12 (at which time it slowly decreases.. point of contact neg to bare metal, pos to back of alt... had alt rebuilt by a reputable source and same problem.. if the Alt was dead, then my tach would be irratic and die.. what else could I look at.. ? Not looking for specific truck issues.... been around that post.. just generally what can create this type of issue.. would a new alt even be a possible solution..

The voltage should be around 14 or 14.5 normally.

Things to look for;

belt tension

idle speed

corroded wiring to the alternator

bad ground to the regulator if you have an external type.

thanks... Its an internal Regulator, had it replaced when rebuilt. One other tid-bit, the rebuild shop did not get it to fail during thier pre-test, but they did feel the rebuild was needed. so not worried about that. The idle, if that means the tach rpm's, they read correctly(600-650 on idle). I also was expecting a dead battery issue, after running it a while, but have not had a problem. I'll look into the other items.

If it's doing the same thing it did before you took it to get it rebuilt, I would suspect you still have an intermittent problem they didn't catch. Something that is not a normal wear item like a intermttent coil winding. If you don't find anything else, I believe I would buy a new alternator.
