Have you made it home yet FN74?
A melted piston will make TONS of blow-by, especially when the intake system is under pressure from the turbo. The blow by will blow right past the piston and stay in the crankcase. At 2500 rpm, that's a LOT of volume. It will overcome the CCV system and then the pressure will start finding alternate routes to the outside world, usually through the valve cover gasket.
I don't know for sure, but to me if you have to pull the engine for repair, I would be doing a comple rebuil on all eight cylinders, therefore, I don't see what you'd hurt by limping it home on 7. If you are only going to address what is wrong then I wouldn't chance it, maybe some one else will chime in that knows more about it.
Oops I see you are still out of town.
Just flog it home, you'll make it.
Turn down the tune to stock if you can, that will help a tiny bit.
Carry a bunch of oil with you, you might need it.
EDIT: Cangim, it's not worth doing a piecemeal repair now. Just get an engine from Diesel Innovations and be done with it. Cheapest repair in the long run and it will last.
Just ask Cookie88, he has one in his truck.
Thanks for all the help guys. Do I need to unplug the dead hole to prevent getting too much fuel and carbon in the oil? I have the CCV mod done, so I should be allright on not building too much PCV pressure. DI was the first place I looked for a motor, but I already have a complete 99 7.3 sitting on the floor in storage with a split #8 piston. I just can't see having basically 2 spare motors sitting around. And fortunately one of my good friends works at an engine machine shop.
This is the second motor I have toasted now, so I am starting to get a bit timid. I do run it very hard, but always watch my EGT's, keep all manintenance current, and perform Blackstone reports regularly. Obviously I am doing something wrong, or just have bad luck.(very plausible). Certainly am open to feedback on how to prevent this from happening again. And as much as I would like a cummins , that just is not an option right now...
What's killing your engines is too high of exhaust temperatures for too long of a period of time.
IMO pushing the 1200 degree envelope, while missing a cooling jet, with a 10,000lb trailer is what did it.
1000 degrees is more like it. You can do that all day long and not worry about it. Maybe even 1100, but that's pushing it with a big load.
Either de-tune (blah) or get a bigger exhaust housing like a 1.15 MINIMUM.
Get a Cannon Exhaust. The bigger the pipe, the easier it is for the spent gasses to get out of the way of the exhaust coming in behind it.
Plus you can blast those gassers on the way up the pass as they are poking along in the slow lane.
There's also a bigger intercooler, and it is good, but don't consider it until you get the exhaust side opened up. That will make a bigger difference than trying to super-cool the intake.
And even after all that, don't consider towing that much weight with that hot of a tune.
I only use the 40 HP Tow/Haul tune with my Diablo Predator and if I really push it I can get the EGT's up to what you were doing with your 80.
Thanks for all the help guys. Do I need to unplug the dead hole to prevent getting too much fuel and carbon in the oil? ...
Leave it plugged in, you'll end up with a SES light and the possibility that the whole left bank will shut down. Damage is already done. Just button it up and nurse it home.
Driving with a dead slug isn't going to get you any kind of oil mileage, but a trip to Wally World or Costco will get you a case and it's a LOT cheaper than the tow bill would be.
Check the oil level often. You WILL get fuel contamination in it, too, but you'll get home.
Just take it EASY. (But I didn't have to tell you that. did I?)
Thanks for the advice Dan. I will go ahead and button her up then. My wife should be here, Mountain Home Idaho, anytime to escort me home. And the one I will never live down, my partners dad is on his way with his dodge to haul the Trailer. Again. Last time was when my tranny went. I am living in Scappoose, just Northwest of Portland. I suppose 1200 leaves little room for any errors, such as a missing jet. Think I am going to start another post on building a reliable 400hp tow motor.
Pop- Thanks for the reassurance. Got to love the die hard ability of diesels sometimes. We are next to a Wally World. Too bad too, I just changed my oil with Royal Purple synthetic.
FN74, sory i didn't read this earier. I'm jusy down the road in Wendell (about 100 miles) if your still in need of help. Call me at AutoTech 208-536 2255. Barney
Well I am home, and so is the truck. Took about 6 gallons of oil to get me another 400 miles at which point I was within the 100 mile towing radius of AAA, so the poor crippled truck got parked, and AAA got called. And there is not one sigle part on my truck that will ever rust now Or my wife's car that was following me.....
Such a great place though, thanks for all the offers of help!!
