Does anyone have any input to swap an 8.8 rear for a 9"?
I plan to rebuild the 3rd member with 4:56 gears and a detroit locker but I mostly need info for swaping in the complete assy. The 9" came out of a 79 van. I have a 6" lift on my 84. I am not sure if I need to move the perches yet. Any info would help alot.
Like Honney said, the diff might be offset. If the 9" were coming from a truck, it should bolt right up to the existing perches. However, some vans came with wider axles than the trucks had. For example, a '78 ford pannel van had a 9" that was 2" wider than the standard 9 inch rearend.
Also, a stock 9" is not that much better than a stock 8.8. Honestly, I would not think that the benefits would be worth the expense and trouble of the swap...

The 9" is the wider one. The axels are standard 28 spline. I have 2 third members one to set up and one for back up you cant have that option with a 8.8
I plan to change the gearing to 4:56, detroit locker and 35 spline. I dont think I will have that problem. Does anyone have any input for rear disc brakes on the 9"?
