well I just changed the differential oil and I noticed a leak but it wasnt from the differential pan. It was coming from the differential and the drive shaft meet. Has anyone encountered this before? Any ideas if its a seal that broke and is it repairable? Help! Thanks. tom
On my 2002 RWD the Ford "Seal Assy." is part #E8TZ-4676-B
I'd also pick up the flange. Possible that your flange is causing the seal to leak. When you remove the flange, inspect it for any marks, etc. If it looks good and you don't use the new one, return it for credit.
Flange # for my 2002 is 2C3Z-4851-AA
I'm on my 3 pinion seal in 5 years and 100K miles. Replaced the flange this time, hope this is the last one.
How are you replacing that seal without installing a new crush sleeve on the pinion. In the manuel, once that pinion flange is loosen a new crush sleeve must be installed to get correct bearing preload.
I had to replace my pinion seal about 3 times with 180,000 miles. I have replaced the seal, and crush collar each time. You are supposed to change the crush collar and torque the pinion nut to get the right preload on the pinion bearing, and to make the gears mesh right.....at least that is what I was tought. I havent needed to replace the yoke yet, just clean it up good and no nicks or burs. I think the seals out today are not as good as the factory/older seals. They seem to fail alot quicker. I have had new seals out of the box leak, and thats with extreme caution with installation!
I've had to change my pinion seal also. The seal can be purchased at the dealer or at an auto parts store. I changed out mine the same way Heatstroked changed his and have had no problems.....The manual says to do it in a much more different way.
