99 explorer, rear shocks

99 explorer, rear shocks

I'm wanting to change the rear shocks and have found that I need to remove the spare tire for easier installation. The problem I am having is that the lug wrench that is with my explorer will not fit into the hole in rear bumper to lower the spare. Has anyone encountered this. I'm just glad I have never had a flat tire to change. Any ideas?

You should be using the jack handle, not the lug wrench.

thanks, I had already found them just before you posted. I appreciate the help though. Looks like a real tight squeeze getting to the left rear shock.

Also, be sure you are using the correct end of the jack handle--its easy to use either end, and one works, one don't. And yes, i found out the hard way!
