Question coolant stains on block?

in continuing my search for where the hell my coolant has been going in my 97 f150 4.2L, i came across a tip from someone saying i should look for coolant stains on the engine block. My quesiton is what do these stains look like? what should i look for (color)? I still cant tell if this slow leak is internal or external, however i have reason to believe it is external since my oil looks fine, and i can smell burning coolant sometimes in the engine compartment (not the exhaust). I think it is a very slow leak since there are never any signs of it on the driveway, it must be driping/seeping onto the block or intake and burning/evaporating right away (hence the smell). Any comments or tips?

I having the same problem with my 4.6L, '97 Expedition. I have looked everywhere. I found a that the connection between the rubber and metal hose going into the engine in the back was leaking a little, but I have fixed that and I can still smell it. It does not smell inside the vehicle so I know it is not the heater core. If anyone responds with the answer, I am interested too.

Have you not read enough information yet to know your lower intake gaskets are leaking? You better realize I know what i'm talking about;I was almost a victim! The people like you, that don't replace them when warned far in advance, suffer hydro-lock and have to either get a new engine or are stuck with a 4500 lb yard ornament! CHANGE THE GASKETS,ASAP!

i do plan on changing them asap, and btw, i was informed about this problem yesterday after spending several hours researching it. I am a full time college student, it's not like i can just drop everything i am doing and fix the problem (even though I am more concerned about fixing my truck rather than homework, haha). I am going to bring it into the dealership where my cousin works at this friday and am going to get some help and find more info about it (free of charge). Then I am going to park the dam thing, and let it sit until i find time to fix it. Thank you everyone for your input, tips, and help. Hopefully, ill have this truck back on the road with no worries!
