Broken Tach.

The tachometer on my '87 6.9L isn't working. Is it hard to fix? Where should I look first for the problem? Thanks

B-Bob,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

My first guess would be the tach sending unit.
Here is a picture with it and the wire connection labled.

When my tack stopped I replaced the sending unit, no help. I then started trying to trace the wire (pulling and moving the wiring harness) and I got a flutter out of the tack. With a little more pulling it started to work fine. I'm sure ists some contact, probably ground but it hasen't missed beat in over 50,000 miles so I'm not searching for it.
