8.8 rearend?

so i bought this truck today for $300 and brought it home. Its pretty nice for what i paid for it. Its a 79 F150 custom with a 400 and C6. Runs great but it needs brakes. I crawl under it at the rearend caught my eye. Being as how its a half ton i thought it would have a 9 inch but it's not. It has a cover instead of the removable third member with 10 bolts holding the cover on. It has the regualar 5x5.5 wheel bolt pattern. The center section itself is sorta square shaped, so i'm pretty sure its an 8.8. Could this have come stock or was this someones hack job?

Only two rear ends were offered on F100/150's from 1973 thru 1979. The Ford 9 inch, and the Dana 44. The Dana 44 has a cover on the back....held on by...10 bolts.

axle code is 13J which said it was a ford axle 2.75 ratio. I looked at pictures of an 8.8 rear and thats definately what i have. Some one must have put it in. It also tells me that it originally came with an auto trans and thats what i have now, but i can tell that it had a 4 speed at one time.

No, Dana 44. I have seen one truck with one in the rear.
Must be out of a later 80's model. It's a good rearend too.

Are any of the brake parts interchangable between 9 inch and 8.8? My parts truck has new brakes on the 9 inch and it would benice if i could use them on this one.

the brakes including the backing plates are the same between an 8.8 and 9" but why in the world would someone replace a 9" with a much weaker axle?

No

F100/150 Rear Axles: Ford 9 inch or the Dana 44. These are 5 lug with a 5.50 bolt circle. Dana 44's have a rear cover with 10 bolt holes. (C7TZ-4036-B Gasket)

F250/350's Rear Axles: used either a Dana 60, Dana 61.1 or Dana 70. These are 8 lug and have a 6.50 bolt circle. These three rear axles have a rear cover with 9 bolt holes.

I've never seen/heard of a Dana 44 REAR.

I have a 1979 F100 with a Dana 61 rear. What do you make of it? Yes, axle code confirms it.

Dana 44's were first used on Ford F1/F100 trucks in 1948...it was the standard rear axle till the 9 inch came out in 1957. It was used from 1957 up till at least 1979 on the rear, and is also used as a front axle on various truck models on 4X4's since 1959.

How can you have a Dana 61 on a F100? F100's had 15" wheels 5.50 bolt pattern. The Dana 61 has 8 lug wheels with a 6.50 bolt pattern. Impossible.

Post the axle code off your VIN plate/sticker, this I gotta see.

Post some pictures of the rear axle too.

When I mentioned the Dana 44 in an earlier post and said it had a 10 bolt hole axle cover, you said in Post #5 did I mean a Dana 61? I answered no. Only the Dana 44 has a 10 bolt hole rear cover, the Dana 60-61-70 have a 9 bolt hole rear axle cover.

Okay, so it's a much older axle...I know next to nothing about trucks prior to 1973. I'm going to google around the Dana 44 rear axle. Yes, I know about the Dana 44 FRONT axle. I only thought Dana 44 was a strictly front 4wd axle until now.

Don't ask me. It looks like it came from the factory that way. It's an original truck. The axle code was 22. It had a low gear (3.01?) count. Every code found including the VIN on the truck matches what was stuck in (model, engine, trans, interior style, etc). FWIW, it was a F100 Ranger with the 302, auto trans (don't recall if it was C4 or C6), A/C and P/S. No power brakes.

Pics? Might have to try my best. It was a strictly parts truck; most of it is gone already. I may still have the axle somewhere. It looks like a regular Dana 60 found on the '79 F350, only the tubes were thinner. The cover was eerily similar to the 60. I distinctly remember it had a drain plug, just like the 60. This threw me off, because I know 9"s didn't. It was sporting the original wheels from factory with the then-new factory 15" plastic turbine hubcaps.

The 8.8 rearend is pretty stout too. I've seen many 9 sec. or faster Mustangs running them.

22 = Dana 61.1 / 3.07 / Non Locking

How did that get into a F100? And have the axle code match on the VIN plate?

Still have the VIN plate? Look on the plate for: DSO number..maybe that'll help.

Book says 61.1 = F250/350
