Hi Guys (and ladies) I have an '01 F-350 4X4 SD extended cab just bought last week. Has about 115K miles and has been pretty well maintained.
I see and read SO much about these power/performance chips. I am looking for better take-off, and maybe better transmission sequence (although the trans. seems to shift very well)
What do you all think would be a good choice? I do NOT tow anything, and only plow occasionally....my driving is mostly highway.
I am not looking to spend a lot for features I don't need, just better takeoff and overall better performance.
Thanks!
Well, for the PCM reflash. You take your PCM out, send it to DP-Tuner, they flash it with their performance program and send it back. You install and it's done.
Their 80e program is bloody awesome. The "e" stands for economy. Most guys with an intake, exhaust and the 80e program are dyno'n near or over the 300 RWHP figure. If you call and speak to Jody or Diane, they will set you up right.
For more money, you can go with a switchable chip instead of the program flash. I have their older twist **** 4-program chip (stock, 40 tow, 80 economy, 120 race) and it tops the mod list as one of the best things done.
Yes, the "switchable" unit I would like. Any info on that one? (prices, etc.) and do you really notice an "at the accelerator" difference? Any undue strain on the motor or extensive loss of MPGs? Thanks
I run a Diesel Innovations six position chip with a dash mounted rotary switch and I love it. It's like a completely different truck since before the install and yeah, you will notice "at the accelerator difference".
Hypertech will allow you to tow at any stage level. Sounds safer to me. They do make a slight bit less power but its safe power for towing. But since you dont tow with your 1 ton truck I guess it does not matter. And 99% on this forum will tell you DP. I think you will be happy with just about anything.
I personally have had three different power chips/programmers. Superchip, SMCT Tuner, BullyDog, and now a DP tuner chip. I can honestly say that I like and am much more impressed by the DP chip than any of the other three.
Jody-DP tuner also has tow specific tunes. I have an 80 tow setting on mine but I believe he also has a 60 tow setting, he asked me how much weight I tow and what kind of terrain it is and recommended the 80 tow to me, call him up and talk to him. My DP chip is by far the best investment I have made so far on my truck.
Speaking of Dp-tuner.com, one of the main titles at the top says: "The New F5 Gauge Pod Mount", but there is no link or anything anywhere on the site. Just wondering if anyone else has heard or seen this?

The DP chip will actually be safer than the Hypertech chip. Jody has spent a lot of time developing tunes for these trucks. He takes into account the cylinder pressures and EGTs among other things. With DP Tuner, you get the best of both, more power and a safer increase in that power.
I've tried several different tuners/programmers, Hypertech, Diablo Predator, Banks 6-gun, and DP Tuner. I'm most impressed with the DP chip.
