the casting number should be D9TE-AB, they were used from1979 on and yes they are just fine for about anything you could want to do. I am using one as the current base for my race engine at around 900hp and it's living, I like them better for stroker applications due to the fact that they have slightly longer cylinder bores so support the piston at BDC better, we did a test a couple years ago sonic testing 36 blocks in one day (actually Dave McClain of McClain machine shop in Cuba MO did the work) we tested blocks from all years even a nascar Boss 9 block and several CJ blocks and found non that showed to be any better as far as cylinder wall etc.So don't feel any need to look for any other block those are just fine.
Only thing to keep in mind is those use external balanced setups and the early cranks will not fit in that block without clearencing.
