I have read hundreds of posts, taken my bronco to several mechanics including ford, replaced nearly every component in the electronic ignition system, removed my wiring harness and tested every wire, fusible link, resistor and diode.
The only difference I was able to make was the bronco ceased running increadibly rough and now wont even start (still turns over).
I have code 18 : loss of tach input to ECA - SPOUT circuit grounded
One thing I have noticed in these posts is that a lot of bronco owners have similar problems but I dont read about many succesfull fixes. Surely someone is aware of the phantom like problems of Fords EFI system and has clear concise information on solving them. I am sick and tired of mechanics telling me such and such part is "bad" and needs replacing, only to have it run even worse or not at all.
well that concludes my ranting and raving thanks for reading, oh and if such information exists please share it with me, thanks again.
my bronco is 1986 5.0L 302 with fuel injection
when it started intermittent running rough i pulled code 18 off it, I checked my entire wiring harness, replaced my timing chain and sproket, entire distributer with efi module, ignition coil, spark plug wires and plugs. Good spark before and after.
After that didnt fix it I replaced the fuel filter, fuel tank fuel pump, tested my pressure and flow, and could feel relay clicking.
When it still didnt run right I replaced EGR valve, oxygen sensor, coolant sensor, pcm valve, vacum relays, checked for vacum leaks and even removed my catylitic converter and muffler.
It actually ran clear once in a while for several minutes so I know its something in the electronic fuel injection going wrong.
At the moment it will turn over but not start and smells like it is flooded.
And no it is not out of time and plug wires are correctly plugged.
All I can think of is my main computer is bad but then im told they never fail.
Have you replaced battery cables lately. When I replaced mine during the engine rebuild I forgot that the negative cable had a direct ground to the computer. Had all sorts of trouble similar to what you have. If you haven't replaced the cables how is the ground that is coming off of the negative to the computer? Might want to check the ground going to computer. Hope this helps and Good Luck,
Rick

While I havent replaced battery cables the problem started when I changed batteries, so taking your advice I checked the computer ground cable (thanks for pointing out computer has direct ground I didnt know that).
Well turns out ground cable and wire are in horrible shape, battery acid corrosion and only couple strands of wires connecting computer.
Tested computer and harness and its okay, so once its all back together ill see if it starts hopefully, keeping fingers crossed.
I have similar problems and wanted to find out how the ECM is grounded and where it is grounded. And also, I can't seem to find the coolant sensor on mine. Where did you find it? I have the same motor and truck.
I have the same problem " the bronco ceased running incredibly rough and now wont even start (still turns over). "
Thank you

ps- Did you ever figure out the problem with yours???
