i have a 99 f350 i am taking down my transmission outto get it rebuilt, so far i have the drive shaft off and the front shaft off allso the cooler lines and the starter off anyone have any tips or past experience doing this i am having problems with the shift cable on the driverside of the transmission i was trying to find a manuel or who to incase i get into problems i have air tools and trans jack. Thanks i hope to get some input.
I just did mine yesterday, the linkage cable is just a snap on end. I just used a flat head screw driver and gently pried it off. If you have a good jack, i just took mine out transfer case and all. Watch on the right side of your lines and your downpipe and dipstick tube. I ended up breaking the tab off my dipstick tube b/c i couldn't see it and got it wedged in there. I think there were 4 connectors on the transmission to undo and 2 on the transfer case and then u can lay the wire harness over the frame. You will need to take the cover off the bottom of the tc and rotate the motor and take all the tc bolts loose, then take the 6 bolts that bolt the transmission to that motor out and drop it down. But like i said, keep a close on the right side, on mine it seemed kinda tight. Hope that helped some.
i just got all the tc bolts off i need the 2 bolts on the upper part of the bell housing i got the first 4 but i need the top two i can't see them do i get them from the top or the bottom, and thanks for the info on the shiftcable and the dip stick did you disonnect the dip stick can i remove it before i drop the tranny i am almost done except for the 2 upper bolts on the bellhousing then jack her up and losen up the crossmember.
If you jack it up and take the cross member out and then let the trans down a little you my have better access to the upper bolts. I would put two bolts back in on the sides and then take the upper bolts out. Then level everything back up and take the easy bolts out. Not sure on your other questions.
got the tranny out thanks for the info no the trouble shooting part i'm gonna get my new pump gears and resealed and replace my torque converter. I checked the oil pan and it had normal wear as far as grey metal shavings, and the oil dose't smell burn so i think i broke something in the tranny, I accerlerated fast casuing the tires to spin and when they gripped the road i just heard a tump the then i had no drive. My transfercase is fine i checked that if anyone has an idea it would help i don't want the transmission shop to try and screw me by saying it is something it really isn't. thanks again.
Sounds like something did break. The only way you are going to know what is going to be to take the transmission apart. Where as you already have the transmission out, you might be able to negotiate a cheaper cost of rebuild with a local shop if you are not comfortable tearing into it. ATSG makes excellent manuals on the tran itself, I rebuilt mine, wasn't hard just time consuming and took a lot of space to spread everything out.
I believe it is Automotive Transmission Service Group and I don't recall were I ordered mine from, there are two for our trannsmission. There is the E40D with Updates and then there is the updated version that is the 4r100. Both cover the same things just the update manual shows the old vs new. Not sure on the 4r100 manual.
Do a quick search for ATSG 4r100 and you'll get a lot of hits, I ordered all my parts from www.txchange.com
thanks i was hoping to do the work myself, it would be nice if i had a manual to go by. The torque converter make a rattling noise when i shake it is that normal? I am pretty good at mechanical work but i have never done a transmission before i think i can do it with a tear down schem and manual. I will try if anyone knows of a site that can help with the rebuild i would appricate it, i am kinda low on coins so i am trying to save as much money as i can thanks again everyone. Also is there any special tools that i need to rebuild my tranny?

Just be real careful when you work on it. You should go ahead and order the sonnex valves since you have it out. You should have a clean area where you can work on it without losing any parts. An old sheet works wonders. You can find a local tranny supply store to purchase a rebuild kit. That is all the seals and clutches which normally go first. Its not as hard as you think providing there are no special tolerance tools. These are esentially a e40d tranny.
If you are going to take it apart. Put a transgo tugger kit in it. It is much better than the sonnax, only it does require the removal and dissassebly of the tran. Since you are doing that anyway. I highly recommed the tugger kit.
