My 82 bronc with a 351 sometimes refuses to start. It does not matter if the truck is hot or cold. Sometimes it will start on the first crank other times it will take many tries to get it started, then sometimes it will not start at all. About a month ago when it refused to start I replaced the electronic module and it fired right up and I figured my problems were over. Now it is doing it again. I took the module and had it tested and it passed. I even swapped it out with the old one and it acted the same. Once it starts it runs great, never misses or dies.
The truck is getting gas but no spark. I am suspecting the ignition switch now but what do you all think??
On my '82 the battery cable from the battery to the solenoid filled up with corrosion and displayed the same symptoms you're reporting. Try changing both cables.
I have an 85 that all of a sudden it wouldn't start you could crank and crank and nothing would happen. I then realized that I would have to get the engine spinning and then let of key and it would start. Replaced ignition switch, no help, replaced starter solenoid and no probs for two years. Mine has the ignition wire comming off of the solenoid.
I eliminated the ignition switch as being the problem as I am getting power to the coil in both the run and start positions. I pulled the distributor cap and rotor out and they had quite a bit of build up on the terminals. Replaced the rotor and cap and the 'ol bronc fires up every time. Maybe that was the problem?? I guess I run with this for a while and see if it fails again. I never suspected the rotor and cap because I assumed that with the high voltage running through there that it would blow right past some build up. Nothing wrong with learning something new. - Mike
