Transmission Change

My 4.9L is mated to a 3 speed automatic transmission and I wanted to swap it out with a 4 speed automatic. Does anyone know if that is possible or is the 4 speed only able to connect to a V-8?

The only reason I was considering swapping out trannys is because sometimes I have to hit the highway and do 70 and the RPMs are in the high 3k range and I was thinking I might get better gas mileage with that extra gear.

These engines Share the Same Bellhousing Bolt Pattern, 240-300/289-302/351W, so any trans that fit any one of these, fits them all.

Correct info on the bell-housings, but remember the V-8's are externally balanced and the I-6's are not. No problem, with the trans & bellhousing, but be certain to get the right flywheel/flex-plate for your type of engine. If you have a V-8 flex-plate, you probably could just cut off the balancing weight - I think it is just spot-welded on. (Whatever holes this process creates should be duplicated exactly on the opposite side of the flex plate to maintain balance.)
