BIG flathead

Does anyone one have photos or links to info about the BIG flatheads offered in F-6? and up trucks.

I saw a very strange looking flathead in a paddock yesterday, and am wondering if it was one.

I can't help with a 337 picture, but the flathead in F6's was the same as in the F1's. F7 and F8 only got the big lincoln flathead.

It appears it was however fitted into the 40 Ford truck it was sitting in front of.

The cab from the truck now has a happy new home with 40pickupgirl, a newish user/lurker here.

If the distributer was in the back it more than likley was a 337. Good motors, not too many people want them because of the lack of performance parts. You have to be inventive but they can be made to scream.

Much more obvious would be the exhaust manifolds; if they are near the intake manifold, it's a Caddy.

Actually it's the other way around. The original plan was to use an enlarged version of the 1948 Lincoln 292 cid V12 engine in the 1949 Lincoln Cosmopolitans.

A quick thumbnail history. The 1949 Mercury was originally the 1949 Ford, the smaller Lincoln's were the Mercury's and the Cosmopolitans were the Lincolns. It was decided in late 1947 by Ford President Ernie Breech, that the coming 1949 Ford was too heavy, so a crash program to develop a lighter Ford was undertaken. Holden "Bob" Koto, working nights was chosen to design the new 1949 Ford, and he did it in a month, using his wife's new stove to bake the clay models. The only change Breech made in the design were the taillights. Originally vertical, he turned them horizontal.

The reason Koto worked nights was that during the day he worked for Raymond Loewy, who was designing the new 1950 Studebakers. When Loewy found out, he fired Koto on the spot, and Koto went to work for Ford. Ever wonder why the 1949 Ford had that spinner in the grille center? Koto copied it from the 1950 Studebaker he was working on!

It was also decided that the 1949 Lincolns were too heavy for the V12, so the 337 cid flathead F-7 truck engine was substituted instead. Good choice, as those V12 engines were dogs.

Now y'all know why there were two different 1949 Lincolns, the smaller version using the Cosmo front end with the Mercury body, and the larger Cosmo models with unique sheetmetal.

Paddock= A place to keep horses just prior to and just after a race. For "Mericans" think Corral.
Many of the terms we use today around automobiles originated from the Equine Community.
"Mericans" are especially adept at changing those words to ones that "fit" their needs, while our Aussie/Kiwi Brothers and Sisters hang on to terms forever.

At car races it's the infield area or sometimes the pits.

Here's a flatty that is in an auction I am going to tomorrow:

I am assuming it is a Caddy, it doesn't look like a Ford product to me. I am I correct?

Bob, it looks to me like one of the earlier Ford flatties, from mid to late 30's? The integrel bell housing is just like the earlier ones, and I forgot which couple of years had the water pumps in the heads, but pretty sure it's early Ford.

Yep, just checked the van pelt site and it's a 32-38 Ford:

Genuine Ford Parts, prolly late 30's, early 40's. Dual waterpumps, intake manifold, location of dizzy typical Ford.

1937/48 346 cid Cadillac/LaSalle V8 has one waterpump, conventional distributor.
