valve seal info

today i started cleaning up the heads to go back on the motor. i purchased a topend gasket set, it came with everything but the intake gas, and the exhaust valve shields. so i went ahead and ordered both. i started breaking down the valve springs to change valve seals. i noticed on the heads that they didnt have the exhaust valve shields. what i mean by the exhaust valve shields, its not the ones that snap into the bottom of the valve spring retainer, its the ones that just sit over the valve guides. there just a white umbrella shaped piece of either plastic or teflon. my question is i went ahead and installed them on the exhaust guides, has anybody else used them or if the heads didnt come with them should i have just left them out?

I hope you didn't replace them thinking you would cure your engine of oil burning. They do very little for smoke (other than cold startup). I'm sure the valves are a little loose by now anyway and could use a little extra seal.

I put them in my engine when I did the rebuild.
Intake and exhaust seals were in my top end gasket set from Fel-Pro.

no didnt think it would cure everything just didnt know if i should have used them because it didnt have them to begin with, i bought them so i used them. i know every gasser that ive ever rebuilt had those shields on the exhaust guides didnt know if a diesel had them. i tell you i was pretty impressed, for as many miles as this engine has on it (263,000) it is still pretty tight. the only issue i seen i had is someone had mixed two bb injectors with six factory injectors. not to sure if this is an issue are not.

Some people would argue this point to death, but you'd never tell the difference with old injectors anyway. Any evidence of lean burning on those two pistons?

cant remember which ones it was but when i took them out the engine three of them were sopping wet on the tips, and all the rest were dry. i figured that was my bad ones. im going to test all of them before i put them back in the engine, ive just about have my homemade tester built. but will probley just put a new set in anyway.

Yeah, they were probably leaking. A new set would be nice if you have the funds to do it. Gives them a nice crisp even rattle.

Yeah, as long as they pop around the same time (around 1600 lbs if I remember right), look ok on the tips and don't drip I'd run 'em again. Put the new ones in the back somewhere so the older ones are easy to get at later.
