Help !! Blown Turbo

Hi All. I am steve in the UK.
Out today in my HD 04 6.0 powerstroke. 120 mile round trip.
Kicked down to overtake a car ( just as normal) "massive bang" sounded like a gun, and belowing out black / grey smoke. I assume I blew the turbo.
Pulled over as soon as possible. I had engine oil coming out of the join on the exhaust under the front seats and out of the rear silencer. I left for a few minutes, started it quickly and heard a nasty rattle. switched off and got a tow truck home. Has anybody experienced this before.
slightly more worrying was I checked the dipstic because when i lifted the bonnet there was a real smell of burning oil and smoke was coming out out the dipstick tube too.
Thanks steve.
forgot to mention i didnt get a reading of oil on the dipstick.
I did check the oil two weeks ago.
Also no sign of oil coming around the engine block.

have your dealer tow it in, covered for 5yrs or 100K.

This sounds like you may have a serious mechanical issue

help blown turbo

If we unbolt & remove the turbo will the truck run!!
at least I can add to the oil and hear how it runs.
I am wondering if it was the fan or impeller rattling on the turbo!
does that make sense.
thanks

Man that sounds like you got more problems than just a turbo. One thing that might help you out is that the engine itself is built my Navistar. If it's PURELY a mechanical problem, and you're Ford dealer can't help you out, you might check around and see if there is a Navistar (International Harvester) dealer around. The truck has an 100K mile warrenty on it. If you're Ford dealer can't fix it, you might suggest to him that other option, and see if they can't pay for a Navistar mech to work on the mechanicals, at least.

Now as far as computer diagnostics, error codes, what have you, a Navistar dealer would be lost as a goose, as the computer and other whatnot like that is purely propriatary Ford. You dealer is going to have to do that part, or get the equipment to do that part.

Hope This Helps

yes and no!! you will have 15qts of oil on the ground and all oer your engine in seconds!! if you really think it is the turbo which i doubt from what you described, take the intake off and inspect the wheel and see if there is any play in the bearings, only takes about 10 minutes for a quick check.

Thanks guys.
The truck is at a lock up compound. I am up there tomoro and im gonna
fill up with oil just to see how much it takes. The block and all the engine compartment and underneath is bone dry. The oil that was lost came thru
the exhaust and when I pulled over there was only a pool of a pint or less
under the middle of the truck. I did notice that when I started up after pulling over that the oil pressure went straight up as normal.
the friend who lived nearby ,drove over where it happened and there was no sign of oil anywhere. I have today located garage who apparently know these
trucks like the back of there hands so ill arrange to get it off to them.
thanks again.
Ill pursue the warranty if its major engine fault.

i bet you money the shaft is broke in the turbo. take off the intake and poke at the compressor wheel with your finger. you will see damage if there is any. if nothing there, the impeller may have come off and is in the down pipe. dont panic if there is metal missing, had one with the same issue and no major problems.

Thanks for the last reply.
Went to the truck with oil today in took 1 1/2 litres.
Filled up & started truck and the engine sounds as sweet as normal.
So you are probably right. Can anybody tell me the best place to source
a turbo in the US so I can order and hopefully get back on the road asap.
thanks again steve.
