I recently replaced the EGR valve on my 1988 Eddie Bauer myself b/c when I took it in they said it needed one. The guy did a test by putting a propane tank up under and when he turned it on the propane was sucked into the engine through the EGR valve and the engine ran alot smoother.
So I replaced it and now I'm getting the check engine light on all the time and it runs just as rough. The code is 31 which is telling me the EVP is out of range. I checked the sensor using an ohm-meter and it goes from 5k to 10k(i think)when you depress the sensor part that moves up and down for the EGR. So it seems to be working, but like the code says may be out of range.
So is it the EVP now and not the EGR? Is there an easy way to test the EGR to make sure it is working? I don't have any kind of vacuum hose or anything like that so I was just wondering.
Any suggestions?
Also, is there an easy way to check the spark plugs? A friend told me to use a broom handle and place it up against the wire and you can hear if it isn't knocking. Anything else?
Brian, a better check on the EVP is to do a voltage check on the signal wire. If it is the white sensor, the range should be between .4v - 3.9v. If the sensor is black, .8v - 4.3v. Run the sensor through its range, and look for smooth voltage movement.
Thanks. I checked it and it was off. I replaced the sensor and the check engine light went off.
Still idling rough on startup though. I still think it's a spark plug or wire. But I keep thinking if it is a spark plug then it should be bad at all speeds, and it's fine once it warms up some.
