I have a 1996 F150 4WD 5.8L. I have duel tanks and cannot run the truck off the front tank. I have replaced the front fuel pump and the selector switch on the dash. I cannot seem to locate the fuel selector valve. I know that it is usaully mounted to the frame on the drivers side but there is nothing there. Does my truck not have one of these? If not then how does it switch between the front and rear tanks? Any ideas would be much appreciated.
You have 2 seperate fuel pumps, 1 in each tank. When you flip the switch on the dash, you are activating either one pump or the other. They both feed into a single supply line and the return line is the same way also.

No it does not have one.

The switch on the dash turns on the selected fuel pump inside the fuel delivery module in each tank. Each fuel delivery module has a hi-pressure check valve to stop the pump side fuel from the other tank from entering its tank. It also has a shuttle valve that it opens when the pump is running to let the low pressure return fuel from the pressure regulator back into the running pumps tank.
Thanks,
That helps alot. When I switch to the front tank the truck sputters and dies. I know that it is not the pump or the switch. Could it be the relay or something else?

The same relay operates both Fuel Delivery Modules. Did you just replace the pump or the whole Fuel Delivery Module?
If you replaced the whole Fuel Delivery Module then look for a pinched line or wiring, if not then you may have to replace the Fuel Delivery Module.
I only replaced the pump. I am now leaning toward a broken wire to the pump or a faulty ground. Guess I'll crawl under and start checking. Thanks for all the great info and help!
