Fuel Tank

just got a couple of quick questions regarding the installation of an early mustang gas tank in our trucks, i can get my hands on one pretty cheap, its a 22 gallon thats supposed to fit a 70 mustang, now my question is will one from that year work, i have read that aarticle classic trucks put out a while back on doin this swap and they say 65-72 but dont specify anything else about it, i know this is like beating a dead horse with all these gas tank questions. also on other question i have is that i have ordered a set of 2 inch dropped shackles for the rear along with 3 inch i-beams, thing is i am also lookin at gettin a set of those damned front spring hangers, question is will i have enough room between the axle or spring and the frame or not, the constructions that DJM has on the net doesnt say a thing about interference but i figured somebody on here has had this dilemma before, thanks for all the help so far

No 1965/73 Mustang came with a 22 gallon gas tank. In 1965/66, only the 14 gallon tanks were available (C5ZZ-9002-A). From 1967 thru 1970 the tanks were 16 gallons (C7ZZ-9002-A). From 1971/73 the tanks were 18 gallons (D1ZZ-9002-A). Same was true for 1967/73 Cougars, as they used the same tanks.

Installing mustang gas tanks are not hard. First remove the last cross member by grinding the head off the rivets and knock them out with a punch. Mine I had to remove about 3/4 of an inch off the bottom of the frame rail to widen it enough so the tank would slide in. I built a frame out of 1x2 square tubing to hold the tank then attach the tank to the frame and slide between the frame rails of the truck. Weld some tab on the cross member you removed so that you can run a bolt through the tab and side of the frame rail to hold it in place at the back of the fuel tank. Run a wire from the sending unit to the old sending unit wire in the cab. I used a fuel cap from a boat supply store and mounted it to the bottom of the bed, attaching it to the tank was fun, needed a 3 foot extension on my ratchet to reach from the bed to the filler neck. Note if you have welded on a roll pan you will need to remove the bed to install, bumper you will be fine.
