TOO much oil

Im trying to diagnose and engine problem on a car I just bought. I checked the oil and stick said about 4 quarts over. PLulled the plugs and they were sitting in oil. Wonder what caused this. other than someone dumping in 4 quarts too much?

Well, new oil is clear, so whoever did it probably couldn't see the oil. I hope they didn't try to run it, cause the crankcase pressure from that can wipe oil a major seal, and the oil can hydrolock a cylinder. This could get costly, if they ran that sucker. Wow, some people as just not mechanically inclined that is for sure.

what year and engine?

is your coolant level dropping? oil foamy and creamy whitish?

is your tranny using excessive ATF, level dropping? vac. mod. on pre '96 auto trannys

people get the ATF and engine oil dipsticks confused, lot kids doing the wash and service

I had a "too much oil" problem just over a year ago in my '93 3.0L and discovered it was the vacuum modulator on the side of the tranny. The diaphram inside the VM cracked and the vacuum hose sucked up transmission fluid that ended up in the crankcase. When mixed dirty engine oil, I couldn't recognize the added transmission fluid. If this is your problem, check other threads here that address what the transmission fluid does to the vacuum hoses and other parts of the intake manifold, etc.

I had this problem with one of my older truck, crankcase was filling with gas.

Chec the cranckcase ventilation first. PCV may cause this problem

Also pull the hose off the tranny modulator if the hose is fluid filled then the vacuum modulator is shot and tranny fluid is leaking into your crankcase.
