Can any of you guys (or gals) tell me what kind of 5 speeds were used in the F7 and larger trucks and if they will bolt to a 239? I know there was a direct 5th and an OD in 5th but who made the trans, clark?
I looked into that a bit and found out that Clark made a couple of transmissions, A 5 speed with and one without OD. I'm pretty sure it's the same one that the F-6/600s used.
I actually found a "core" transmission in Portland, OR... that the seller would rebuild for me but it was going to be $1500-1800 for it.
I can't remember the model number but someone here will probably have it.
I decided not to do it.
Regards,
Rick

Here's what the parts book sez inre to F7-8. Will they bolt to a 239? Dunno
1948/52: Clark 5 Speed Overdrive / Case marked in paint: 5Q / ID # 204VO
1948/52: Clark 5 Speed Direct Drive / Case marked in paint: 5QH / ID # 205V
Something to consider: 1949/51 Lincolns used the 337 Flathead V8. The transmissions used were a B/W R-10 O/D and Horrors! Hydramatic in 1950/51.
Truth in transmissions: Most if not all Ford 3-speed & 3 o/d transmissions were made by Borg Warner after WWII. Henry's Wonderful Model T's had a planetary trans, the A Models were home grown 3 speeds (dble clutchers), and from the Deuce thru 1942, both Ford & B/W's were used.
Eaton 2 speed rear ends were available in vacuum or electric.
Don't forget the Columbia Overdrives (two speed rear ends). From the late 1930's thru 1948 this rear axle mounted unit was available. Columbia's were a popular option, and were originally installed on the 1934 Auburns. The Columbia Overdrive was the only o/d available on Ford/Mercs till 1949. From 1949 till 1965 on cars; 1972 on trucks, the o/d's were all made by B/W. Lincoln V12's from 1940 (or so) to 1948 used a B/W O/D, prolly a R-9.

YES! completely forgot about the Columbia 2 speeds! They were quite popular with the early dragracers and moonshine runners. The former could run low ratio rear gears at the strip then switch into OD for the drive home. The latter could use lower rear ratios to get their heavy load of shine moving then switch into OD so they didn't run out of top end speed when chased by the rev agents.
