I am thinking about making the swap from the ford 460 to a newer truck with a V10. I think I have found a pretty good deal on a truck, but I am curious how many miles you are getting out of these motors. The truck I know the history, and it is all highway miles but it has a 146,000 on it., It is a 2001 short bed quad cab. I am looking for suggestions, my ford now is a 93 ford 460,
I have 161,000 on my 99 and it's still good. I'm going to try to run it to 250,000 and by then maybe the SD will have new sheet metal etc.
The Co I used to work for has a 99 V10 F-550 that weighs 9000 empty and is frequently loaded with 15,000# of product. It has 190,000+ miles on it and it is just starting to suffer from lack of compression, but this could be due to the fact that the oil was never topped off between oil changes.
A tech I spoke with has seen a few rental car shuttle bus E-Series cut-away vans with 300,000 miles on the original V10.
When they start to show internal wear (around 165,000 miles average) it is most noticable by front motor cam chain noise..... first piston tap (rod knock) I ever heard on a V10 had 250K+ miles on the clock
Many of the commercial users that have good systematic maintenance schedules can see well over 300K before junking the whole truck
By the time the chain and gears are singing it usual suggests the cams, bearings, followers and other components are well worn
Depending on the vehicle the full R&R would include removing the Cab to get to the top of motor access, or removing the motor...either way, a lot of labor charges
OTOH--- if it is suspected that just the cam drive system is going south, then yes, the access and repair is not that involved
