strange noise while turning
I noticed a strange noise today while turning full lock left or right. It is similar to the noise you here when you are in four wheel drive and turn the wheel. It sounds like a shuddering noise. Could the 4 wheel drive not be disengaging all the way?

If you turn the wheel full right or left, the power steering makes a noise because it is trying to push it farther but cant. Its normal

Its makes the grinding while moving. It sounds like the four wheel drive is still engaged but not as extreme. I know the sound you are thinking of .

Could be your limited slip differential. We had an expedition that made noise when turning hard left or right, friction fluid helped to fix that.

So you think the noise is coming from the rear? It feels like its in the front , but I know what your talking about with posi binding.

On my expedition, I totally thought the was in the front-end. After digging further, it was in the rear-end and the fix was relatively easy.
Hopefully I'm not taking you out on some wild goose chase, just relating my situation.

Make sure your hubs are disengaged - reach under and try to turn each front axle, if you can't then they are engaged; if you can, then they are free and you need to look at other causes.

So I should be able to reach behind the wheel and turn the axle? How about the front drive shaft? Should that turn also?

Ok the axle does not turn when the hubs are unlocked. Does this mean new hubs?

No, it means you can try to unstick them.
I've been able to move the selector (LOCK/AUTO) back and forth while movin gthe axle shaft back-n-forth and eventually get the hub to unlock. Start there and see what happens.
You can also switch it to 4HI and back to 2WD and see if the vacuum pulse will unlock it.
