There was some discussion in an old thread concerning spark plugs coming out. One fellow said, "That would be 97-02. Mid year 03 they added threads to the heads."
What was he talking about. Back in my poorer days, I changed many a spark plug. Can't imagine one w/out threads. What am I missing here?
Some owners have had plugs loosen over time and back out enough for them to spit out of the head. There are only about 3 - 4 threads in the heads and some will pull the threads out of the head when they are spit out. Later model engines, Ford added more threads in the head. That occured in 2003.
While this does happen, forums like this will tend to attract the problem owners/vehicles. This in no way reflects the majority of these trucks/owners. Ford does not recognize this as a problem, blaming it more on improper maintenance by the owners, not getting the plug tightened correctly.
i would put them hand tight then 1/2 more of a turn but also out anti-seize on them before installing them. i had the same question and this is how it was answered to me
