1983 F150 351W OverHeating Problems

Need advise as to where to start.

This past weekend, I was driving the truck as normal then all of a sudden it started runing very hot and my lower radiator hose burst, and was spewing coolant and steam everywhere.

Thinking that my radiator hose burst, nad that caused my overheating problem, I replaced the bad hose with a new one, added about 1.5 gallons of coolant...I know it should have taken about 2-2.5 gallons but that is all I had on location, and started it back up.

The engine went back up to hot after about 3 minutes of idle. When I check the engine, the Upper Radiator hose is very hot, and almost looks like it is buldging a little bit. I felt the lower radiator hose that I just put on, and it is cool to the touch, with no signs of bulging.

What might this be?

I had it towed to a shop, and they pressure tested it, and said coolant was leaking from my intake gasket.

They want to replace intake gasket, thermostate, hoses, etc...

Please advise ASAP if this sounds legitimate.

I put a new water pump on about 1 1/2 years ago, and new Heater Core about 2 months ago.

The first thing i would try is changing the thermostat. If the intake is leaking a slight amount it will make a slight difference but not enough to make it jump up to hot that quickly.

I'd second that notion. Sounds like a classic thermostat failure. It's easy to do yourself and cheap (less than $10). Do the cheap stuff first...
