Hey everyone, I read a post from way back about tips for using a shotgun for home defense. One guy had a good technique. He used a double barrel side by side. First barrel was loaded with rock salt. The second had a good deer slug. Scares the s*** out of the intruder, and if he kept coming at you you could finish him off. And testify in court that you gave him a fair chance to escape. My question is this. I own a Noble 20 guage with a 24" barrel at full choke. Does anyone know where i can get some shells with rock salt in them instead of buckshot? Any info would be appreciated.
I think that the best rule of thumb is to not shoot at anything you don't want to kill, but when you do make sure you actually do it.
I would use the first shell with heavy bird shot and the rest would be buck shot. Shoot to kill or dont shoot. If you fire salt and then wait to see what happens you are likley to catch some return fire.
Rocksalt might be good for keeping people out of your orchard, but for home (inside the home) defense deadly force is called for.
You gave the guy all the notice he needed when you locked your doors and windows.
I agree.
The only reason to point a firearm at anything is when you have made the decision to kill that person/animal.
Firearms are meant for one reason only, to kill.
DOn't get me wrong, I love to hunt and own several rifles and shotguns. But they are meant to kill, not to wound, or frighten.
The sound of a pump shotgun chambering a round in my opinion is enough of a warning.
If that dosent work, then point and shoot.
you can load your own shells with rock salt, but like the other guys said, use real bullets, someone breaking into your house doesn't deserve a warning.
*Side Note, don't use a slug in your house. There is no telling what may behind the intruder at the time you fire. Meaning your wife, child, or loved one's room may be on the other side of that wall if you miss, and I'm betting your neighbor doesn't want that wake-up call should that slug go through a window. Stick to heavy bird shot or "00" at the most.
I don't even own a gun but I agree that you should use real ammo in the gun, not rocksalt. You won't know if the intruder has a weapon or not. It's your life or his. I also agree with the other statement that you should not use slugs... that could pass through the intruder and hit someone else.
This is a little off topic but I thought it was interesting.
I was told that if an intruder does not brandish a weapon and does not threaten you then it is illegal to use deadly force. And you could actually be charged with murder in this case. Is this true?

Not in good ol' Colorado. We have the "Make my Day" law. Basically you can defend your home against unlawful intruders with lethal force.
Ha not in this state!!! in this state (mass) they have some of the most restrictive laws when it's comes to firearms! bottom line --- if a intruder breaks into your home and threatens you if you have a gun with the laws it's hard to have one, but if you do i hope you bought the largest gun you could as by the time you get it unlocked from the trigger lock, you'd be better off using it as a club!!! and if the intruder breaks in and steals your gun and you didn't have a trigger lock, well you just committed a felony!!!
where would you find out laws like that? when its legal to use deadly force and not...becasue you always hear of the lawsuites where an intruder hurt himself or did something stupid and ends up suing the homeowner and wins.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Dec-02 AT 01:14 PM (EST)]- I've had the mindset to shoot to kill. Who cares what the law says? I'd rather be alive and in prison that to have my self or family assaulted! Bedsides, I wouldn,t want to screw up my old double barrel with all that salt!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Dec-02 AT 01:42 PM (EST)]Thanks for the info guys. I will probably just stick with a heavy load. Not 00 buck but BB size. (forgot what # shot it is). I can't fire a slug through my barrel. It's full choke. Speaking of barrels, does anyone know where i can get an 18" barrel with no choke?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Dec-02 AT 02:21 PM (EST)]My Winchester was 18" out of the store. What type of gun do you have? Some of the guys here will be able to help I'm sure.
Edit: Nevermind just re-read your first post about the Noble 20 gauge 24".
