Hello everyone, I'm new here and new to Fords. I just recently picked up a 1974 F-100 along with a 1975 F-100 parts truck. The 74 is a 4x4 with a 429 and C6 tranny. It's currently setup with Full Time 4x4 which I want to swap out with the parts truck manual 4x4. Now my folks taught me never to assume, but I'm assuming the swap of the front axel should be pretty straight forward. I’m also assuming I’ll have to swap out the transfer case from the 75. Unfortunately, the 75 does not have a transfer case.
So I have two questions, is the axel swap from the 75 manual to the 74 full time as straight forward as I’m assuming. And secondly should I just be looking for a used manual transfer case or are there some good aftermarket ones I should be looking at?<O</O
You should not have to swap any axles. Just get some lock out hubs, I like Warn, but any will do. just install the new hubs and you have part time 4x4. What T-case do have? If its a 203 it is a good T-case and strong enough for mose everything. If you want a little stronger find a 205. I cant remember if they are a direct bolt up, but someone here can or call advanced adapters they can tell you for sure. Jesse.

Thanks for the reply LOWBOY1979. It was my understanding that the T-case only has 4 Hi, 4 Lo & Lock, but obviously I could be wrong. If it's as easy as just installing new hubs that would be great. Not sure what T-case I have, what is the easiest way to identify it? Is there a link somewhere on this site? Again, thanks for your response.
The T- case will always be in 4-hi and the front driveshaft will always spin but with the hubs unlocked it will not power the front wheels. 2wd. That will save alot of fuel. To ID the T-case, just look at it and see if there is a tag or not. It could be a Dana 24 or a New Process 203 if it is stock. I fit is a 203 it will have a big round drum thing that sticks out about 5" from the case. It is on the rear of the T-case nexed to the driveshaft. But both should be taged. let me know if you need more info. Jesse.
hey, i have a 77 that is fulltime and i just put a set of lockouts on it and it works fine.. your entire drivetrain is working in fourwheel drive still but, the front tires no longer pull.. unless you lock in your hubs. saved bigtime in gas prices

Thanks again for the info Jesse. I'll take a look at the T-case tomorrow and see what I've got. I plan on doing lots of towin and towin heavy stuff. Would I be better off upgrading if it's only a 203 or a Dana 24? Again, thanks Jesse.

Thanks for the info ezryder13... Have you seen any other down falls from just using the lockouts?
Did you look into the conversion kits for the T-case? I've found a couple for just over $100.
nah i didnt feel like getting into that right away i was looking for a quick fix. i have 2 trucks a 77 and a 78 if you look at my gallery you will see that black one is (was) the fulltime 4x4.. i dont drive her much cuz she's so sweet, so, the lockouts where good for me..

Those are some nice rides bro... I have an 06 Rubi Unlimited. I've seen lots of Jeeps on this site so far, lol... My first pick for the Fords would have been a 78-79 SB, but here in cali I don't want to have worry about smog. Anyway, I'm starting the tear down of the truck right now so I don't really need a quick fix, but I really appreciate the input. Again, those are some nice rides....

thank you.. that jeep has more in it than i can list here. but, she will tear up any trail in front of her.. and i would love to have a rubi..
yeah if your not lookin for a quick fix set her up right..you'll be happier in the long run..keep us all posted on your progress, get some pics in your gallery so we can peek out your rides and good luck!!!

Thanks man and will do. I'm tearin into the parts truck right now strippin it down so the wife will quit biatchin about having to look at it LoL. But I'll get some pics of the start of the 74 and pics of my progress as it goes.
One last question, should I just go with the conversion kit or should I be looking for a stock non-full time 4wd T-case?
We have a 78 blazer at work, that we plow snow with. Every one who has ever driven this piece of crap has beat it as hard as they can, and the stock 203 has not missed a beat. I think it would hold up to most anything. Jesse.
you know to be honest i never seen one of those kits (never looked) so i dont know what they consist of. i would imagine you would have to slit the transfer case and change some internals (obviously) so i dont know.. i guess it based on your mechanical knowledge.. i would look into both options.. ecspecailly if you have to have someone rebuild the transfer case it could cost a much or more as it would to get another one.. let me know if you get the kit and what it consists of.. kinda corious to know.. good luck again
