I've been researching on here for the last couple of hours and found mostly what i need to know but one last ? do 302's and 351's both need balance flywheels? I have a 300 six now but i know the flywheel on them isn't balanced. Thanks for any help.
Its all up to the year motor. The 302 and the 351's had a balanced flywheel. The 300 I 6 had a ZERO balance flywheel. and the 302 and 351 ( dedending on the year) had a counter balance to them. You will have to get a new flywheel for that year motor.
Now I have been told ( so I really dont know for sure ) you can have your 300 one changed over to work on your new V8? I dont know for sure and I am not sure what would be cheaper. When I swapped my 300 I 6 out for my 351 4VHO V8 I bought a new one aftermarket at my local junkyard. I could not say price but it was cheaper then I thought it would be.
An '89 302 would use a 50 oz imbalance flywheel/flexplate. The 351 and early 302 engines used a 28 oz imbalance flywheel or flexplate. IIRC Ford went to the 50 oz imbalance onn the 302 in the early 80's. The 300 is 0 balance. You want the right flywheel on your engine to prevent vibration/severe engine damage.
You could have a machine shop rebalance your 300 flywheel if need be. I bought a new flywheel for my truck from Advance Auto for under $100.

I have an 1981 F100, with an I6. It's been rebuilt, also new carb, distributor, plugs wires, etc, flywheel. After $1500 it still runs like ****. I've taken it to 2 different Ford Shops, 2 different mechanics and noone can get it to run right. I have to set the idle up just to keep it running and from stalling out all the time, and it idles rough.
Anway,, I've been thinking of putting in a 351 windsor. I've been told it's fairly simple since there is no EFI, and the C6 tranny will bolt up to it. The main mods are the mounts, radiator, flywheel so I've been told. Any advice, add ons, what I need, what problems I'll have, or if anyone has step by step instructions that would be great.haha
My dad is actually a mechanic and he offered to help me do it, so were going to tackle it. Just wanted to ask guys who've already done it, what to expect and parts to buy.
Thanks
