Maybe the cave I live in is smaller than I thought. But recently I've been hearing/reading about people using a C4 behind some big motors (385 series-514,521,545,etc.)for street/strip and full drag race.So my question(s) Are they strong enough? Is it a gearing thing (like a powerglide)for light vehicles.
It's a weight thing. I ran a C4 behind my van for years. I was towing constantly. I would have to rebuild it about every 3 years. The last time it gave out, it blew the planetarys. The guys running these in big block drag cars, tear them down every season. They are a good trans, but I finally went to a C6 and now have 5 years on the trans and no problem. I think, in your case you would be better off with a C6. They are just as simple as a C4, just beefier.
I was more curious than anything.I called my trans. "guy" and he said all the one's that he does (big block applications)end up going in "little" stuff, i.e.Fox body's,Maverick's,etc. Thanks.
Fox bodies were offered originally with C3's; C4's; and C5's..it depended on the engine size and emissions.
All Maverick's and Comets had C4's. It was the only automatic trans offered.
All 1965/73 Mustangs/Cougars with 289 or 302 engines offered C4's, as did the 200 sixes in the 'stangs. No other auto trans' were offered for these applications.
btw, in 1958 and later, the Chevy's with 348 engines didn't use Powerglide...they had a new transmission..Turboglide.
NumberD,yes I knew that.I was referring to race and street/strip applications (not OE).I see you were a "parts man",it's a da** shame most of the guys nowadays don't have a clue.Call a dealer now and the response is "A Micro-What? Give me the last 8".
