Automatic lockup?

What determines when the 4R100 will lock up after a cold startup? Mine is taking more miles to lock up now. Normally, It locks up after 5 miles but today it went 7 miles. I assume it is tranny temp but I don't know why it is taking longer to get it locked.

It [i]is[i/] tranny temp but also engine & catalytic converter temp. The tranny doesn't shift to OD or lockup so that the RPMs stay higher and therefore heat the cat' up faster.

Has it been colder than normal where you live?

I should have mentioned the tempature, it was around 27 this morning. It has been colder. Most mornings, mine doesn't get hardly any warmup. I had a 95 F250 with a diesel and its auto would lock up just about everyday in the winter at 4 miles. This 01 locks up most days at 4 miles but has been getting a little further out now. I didn't know if something was going haywire or what.

Well...assuming you're all up to date with scheduled maintenance and barring any pending mechanical failure, I would suggest that you watch it and see if it gets "better" as the ambient temps warm. You live in Kansas, right? Warm should be heading your way in about 2-3 months.

You might wanna warm your truck up a little longer, too. Plus, I would say that the 95 diesel PCM and the 01 pas PCM have completely different strategies as it pertains to emissions.
